Now Playing: British Comedy Wicked Little Letters starring Olivia Colman!

May 17, 18, 19, 22 & 23

This Is Spinal Tap shines a light on the self-contained universe of a metal band struggling to get back on the charts, including everything from its complicated history of ups and downs, gold albums, name changes and undersold concert dates, along with the full host of requisite groupies, promoters, hangers-on and historians, sessions, release events and those special behind-the-scenes moments that keep it all real.

The film is a composite of classic moments, all of which we sense could have happened to any of the classic heavy metal bands — or at least to those whose members combined delusions of greatness with low I.Q.s.

Reiner’s brilliant “rockumentary” sends up its subject matter and the documentary form, with such deft perception that confusing it with the genuine article is an easy mistake to make.
