🇩🇰 Mads Mikkelsen Stars in Rousing Period Epic

In 1755, the impoverished Captain Ludvig Kahlen sets out to conquer the harsh, uninhabitable Danish heath with a seemingly impossible goal: to build a colony in the name of the King, in exchange for a royal title. The heath meant certain death – a godforsaken place haunted by ravenous wolves, highwaymen, and a brutal and unforgiving nature. The sole ruler of the area, the merciless Frederik de Schinkel, believes this land belongs to him and does everything in his power to drive the captain away.

This epic historical drama film directed by Nikolaj Arcel, features a stellar cast including Mads Mikkelsen, Amanda Collin, and Simon Bennebjerg. The movie is based on Ida Jessen’s novel “The Captain and Ann Barbara” and is a collaborative production between Denmark, Germany, and Sweden.

The kind of ravishing, rousing epic we don’t really get much of anymore.

New York Magazine

It’s a handsome production that displays all the virtues of assured old-fashioned storytelling without a trace of stodge.
