Hosted by the Cinema Society of Kingston. The film’s programmer, Kingston-based Cinematographer (and martial arts cinema buff) Joe Elliot will introduce the film.
Years before Shaw Brothers became known for kung fu films, they drew crowds with wuxia pian—mythic swordfighting tales full of honor and high-flying heroes. Come Drink With Me, director King Hu’s final film for the studio, revolutionized martial arts cinema and launched Cheng Pei-pei to stardom.
When a governor’s son is kidnapped, a mysterious swordsman named Golden Swallow (Cheng) sets out to rescue him—revealing herself to be both a woman and the hostage’s sister. A drunken beggar (Yueh Hua) joins her, hiding secrets of his own.
Long before Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, King Hu set the original template in what is still considered one of Shaw Brothers’ greatest and most influential action masterpieces.
