Updated December 7, 2017: The Screening Room is hiring! We have 2 different positions to fill: Assistant Manager & Usher; see below for descriptions. 1. Assistant Manager

We are looking to add a new assistant manager to our team; the successful candidate will be someone who loves serving customers, is adept at coordinating the work of others, and will take a personal satisfaction in contributing to independent cinema in Kingston.  This is a part-time job with flexibility to accommodate other life commitments.

  • Pay: $16.50 / hour
  • Hours: Around 20-25 hours/week, with a *possibility* of increasing to more hours later in 2018.
  • Starting: Early January 2018 (exact date flexible).

Job Description:

The Assistant Manager’s work will entail:

  • Serving as the on-site “shift manager” 2-3 times a week; keyholder position with supervisory responsibilities.
  • Serving customers food & drinks at the Snack Bar with efficiency and patience.
  • Basic operation of the movie projectors and some other cinema-related technologies.
  • Shift scheduling of other staff.
  • Some light cleaning and maintenance of the cinema space.
  • Responding to inquiries about venue rentals; potentially some management & coordination of venue rentals & special screenings.


  • At least 3 years of front-line customer service experience.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience.
  • Great “soft skills”; very comfortable working with people, interpreting needs, giving feedback, managing occasional crowds, etc.
  • Available to work until 10:30/11pm on some evenings; available to work on some weekends.
  • An interest in the types of movies we play at The Screening Room.

2. Usher

We are looking to add 1-2 Ushers to our team; the successful candidates will be fast-learners who enjoy serving customers and take satisfaction in cleaning work. This is a great job for someone with a flexible schedule who has always daydreamed of working at an independent movie theatre!

  • Pay: $14 / hour.
  • Hours: 12-18 hours a week.
  • Starting: Early January 2018

Job Description:

The Usher’s work will entail:

  • Cleaning the lobby, Snack Bar area and washrooms.
  • Serving customers food & drinks at the Snack Bar with efficiency and patience, occasional ticket selling & other customer service duties.
  • Keeping supplies stocked & organized, being available to perform other odd jobs as needed.


  • Available to work on evenings and weekends.
  • Customer service experience a plus but not required.
  • Cleaning experience a plus but not required.
  • Strong work ethic, OK with doing the same tasks over and over again.
  • An interest in the types of movies we play at The Screening Room.

The Screening Room is an independently-run movie owned & operated by Wendy Huot. The Screening Room’s mandate is to provide a friendly & intelligent movie-going experience to diehard cinephiles, casual movie-goers and everyone inbetween. We specialize in playing films you won’t see at the multiplex: independent, foreign, art and classic cinema.

Our team values pragmatism, problem-solving, humour, honesty and good communication. We are community-oriented to our core and serve as a venue for numerous film events hosted by local organizations and causes. Our business is currently expanding; we are undergoing a major renovation and expect to see an increase in business in 2018!
